A small reservoir and hillside reserve on Windhoek's edge, offering easy hiking, birdwatching and sunset views over the capital.

Avis Dam Nature Reserve sits just east of central Windhoek, where a small reservoir and surrounding camelthorn hills offer an easy escape from the capital without leaving city limits. Circular trails wind along the dam wall and up into the rocky hillside, drawing joggers, dog-walkers and birders alike to a reserve that hosts over 150 recorded bird species, from African fish eagles to Rüppell's korhaan. Sweeping views over Windhoek's northern suburbs make it a popular sunset spot, while the dam itself — built in the 1930s — remains an emergency water reserve for the city.
