Africa's first reserve established by local tribal authority, protecting a third of the Okavango Delta's floodplains and Big Five wildlife.

Established in 1963 by the Batawana people under Chief Moremi III's widow, Moremi Game Reserve was Africa's first protected area created by local tribal authority rather than a colonial government, and remains one of the Okavango Delta's wildlife jewels. Spanning floodplain, lagoon, mopane forest and dry savannah across roughly a third of the Delta, Moremi delivers reliable Big Five sightings alongside healthy populations of wild dog, cheetah and over 400 recorded bird species. Both the dry Mopane Tongue in the reserve's east and the flooded Xakanaxa and Khwai areas in the north offer distinct safari experiences, from classic game drives to mokoro trips through papyrus channels.
