A community-run sanctuary on Sowa Pan's shore, drawing tens of thousands of flamingos when seasonal rains flood the salt flats.

Community-run since its founding in 1993, Nata Bird Sanctuary protects a section of the Sowa Pan's northern shore where seasonal rains transform the Makgadikgadi's salt flats into a shallow lake, drawing tens of thousands of flamingos along with pelicans, ducks and wading birds between roughly December and April. Run jointly by five surrounding villages, the sanctuary channels its entry fees back into local community projects, making it a rare example of grassroots conservation in the Makgadikgadi region. Short game drives also turn up springbok, wildebeest and the occasional brown hyena on the acacia-dotted plains surrounding the pan.
